Caring for Your New Kitchen: Tips to Keep It Looking and Functioning at Its Best

A new kitchen is a significant investment and the true heart of your home. To keep it looking its best and ensure longevity, it’s important to follow proper care and maintenance routines. Whether you have a high-end engineered stone benchtop, a durable laminate surface, or specialty fixtures, taking the right steps will help maintain both appearance and functionality.

Stone Benchtop Care
Stone surfaces such as granite, marble, and engineered stone are durable and stylish but require special care to prevent staining and damage:

  • Use Non-Abrasive Cleaners: Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. A soft cloth with warm soapy water or a pH-neutral cleaner is ideal for daily maintenance.
  • Avoid Direct Heat and Sharp Objects: Protect your benchtop by using trivets for hot pans and cutting boards to avoid scratching the surface

Laminate Benchtop Maintenance
Laminate is known for its versatility and affordability, but it can be damaged by improper cleaning methods:

  • Gentle Cleaning: A simple wipe down with a damp cloth and mild detergent will suffice for day-to-day cleaning. For tougher stains, use a gentle household cleaner like Ajax or Mr Muscle, but avoid anything abrasive that could scratch the surface.
  • Protect from Heat and Cuts: Never place hot pans or cut directly on laminate. Always use heat-resistant mats and cutting boards

Cooktop Care (Induction and Gas)
Caring for your cooktop properly will ensure optimal performance and longevity:

  • Induction Cooktops: Use only soft cloths or sponges to clean the glass surface. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could scratch the surface. For stubborn stains, use a dedicated induction cooktop cleaner (e.g. Cerapol), and always ensure the surface is cool before cleaning. Avoid dragging pots or pans across the surface, as this can cause scratches.
  • Gas Cooktops: Regularly remove and soak burner components in warm, soapy water to clean away grease buildup. Use a soft brush or non-abrasive pad to scrub away any debris. For the cooktop surface, a mild detergent and soft sponge will keep it clean. Be sure to dry all components thoroughly before reassembling to prevent rust

Tapware and Sink Care
Tapware and sinks are high-use areas that require specific care to maintain their shine and function:

  • Tapware: Use a mild soapy solution and a soft cloth to clean chrome, stainless steel, or matte tapware finishes. Avoid using abrasive pads or harsh chemicals, which can damage the finish. To prevent water spots and limescale, wipe the tapware dry after each use. For tougher build-up, use a solution of white vinegar and water (50/50) to gently dissolve mineral deposits.
  • Sinks: Stainless steel sinks should be cleaned with a soft cloth or sponge and a non-abrasive cleaner. Avoid bleach or steel wool, which can scratch or dull the finish. For stubborn stains or water spots, baking soda mixed with a bit of water can work as a gentle abrasive

Cabinet and Storage Space Care
Maintaining cabinets is just as important as caring for benchtops:

  • Avoid Excessive Moisture: Wooden cabinets are susceptible to warping when exposed to moisture. Use exhaust fans while cooking and wipe up any spills immediately.
  • Routine Cleaning: Wipe down cabinets with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive pads that can damage the finish

General Cleaning Tips for Your Kitchen
Keeping your kitchen surfaces clean and organized is key to preserving its beauty and functionality:

  • Daily: Wipe down benchtops, cabinets, and high-touch surfaces like stovetops and light switches. Clean spills immediately to avoid staining
  • Weekly: Mop floors and deep clean small appliances like toasters and microwaves.
  • Monthly: Empty out your fridge and pantry, clean behind large appliances, and give your oven a thorough clean

By implementing these simple care practices, your dream will remain as beautiful and functional as the day it was installed.
